“So? What do you think, Kristoff. It’s good, ja?”

The temperature had dropped dramatically, ice covering most of the snow. The wind was howling louder than ever outside Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post, but indoors, Kristoff was wrapped in a small plaid towel as he sat squished inside a very warm, very steamy wooden room alongside Oaken, Jorgen, and the rest of their family.

Everyone looked at Kristoff expectantly, smiles written on their sweaty faces.

Kristoff wiped his brow. Sweat was dripping off the tip of his nose. “I . . . guess this is one way to spend a cold evening.”

He could think of another—in the Valley of the Living Rock with his own family, where the only steam he saw was the kind that came out of the natural rocks in the earth. Trolls didn’t normally stand over it and sweat for the fun of it. Oaken’s family apparently liked sweating. Post-dinner sauna sessions, he’d learned, were a nightly occurrence.

The room creaked as the wind continued to roar. Kristoff looked at the roof and thought of Sven outside in the barn. He wasn’t used to being this far away from his buddy, but Sven knew the other horses inside the barn already and happily trotted in, content with hay and carrots to keep him company.

“I hope your parents aren’t worried about you, Kristoff,” said Helga, Oaken’s wife. “I feel bad that there was no way to reach them to let them know you’re safe with us for the night.”

Kristoff had thought the same thing, but he knew Bulda and Cliff would see the blizzard and know he was smart enough not to try to make the journey home in such conditions. “My family knows weather,” Kristoff said cryptically. “They’d never want me to travel in this if I didn’t have to. I don’t think they’ll worry.”

“Wait till they hear you spent the snowstorm in a sauna,” said Oaken. “They’ll want one of their own. Ja?” He patted the wood frame. “This one is of my own invention.”

He could not see Bulda using a sauna. “How long do you all stay in here?” Kristoff looked at his fingers, which had started to prune.

“For hours,” said Ida, Jorgen’s little sister, whose braids were piled on top of her head. “Sometimes we have sing-alongs and lose track of time.” She looked at her father. “Ooh! Should I get the lute?”

“Maybe we can skip the sing-along tonight,” Jorgen said hurriedly, and gave Kristoff an apologetic look. “Kristoff isn’t as used to the steam as the rest of us. I think he’d probably prefer if we sang by the fire.”

“A fire sounds nice,” Kristoff said, glancing at the door longingly.

“Ja, that might be a good idea,” said Oaken, pulling his towel tight around his waist and climbing over everyone’s legs to get to the door. He cracked it open and cold air rushed in. “Everyone, get in their pajamas first.”

“Kristoff, you need anything to sleep in?” Helga asked.

“I have pajamas for sale, half-off,” Oaken said quickly as the rest of the kids filed past him to get out of the small space.
